Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Ulla Tornaes, arrived in Kathmandu Tuesday on a four-day long visit aimed at assisting in Nepal’s peace process.

Upon arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Tornaes told reporters that her visit would be focused on the Danish government’s role in Nepal’s peace process. She said decision on Danish assistance to Nepal government would be taken after a study, she said.

Shortly after her arrival in Kathmandu, Tornaes met with Ian Martin, the personal representative of United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, and discussed Nepal’s peace process and the process of UN monitoring.

The Danish minister also held a meeting with CPN (UML) general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal at the UML central office in Balkhu today. The two discussed the ongoing peace efforts and the prospective assistance of the Danish government in this regard, according to the UML.

During her stay in Nepal, Tornaes will visit some western districts and inspect the projects run with Danish aid. She is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister GP Koirala, senior government officials, leaders of various political parties and civil society representatives.

She is visiting Nepal amidst reports that the Danish government has pledged Rs.1.86 billion grant assistance to Nepal for electrification in rural areas.

The Danish Embassy in Kathmandu has said it is a re-evaluation visit and that no agreement will be signed on assistance during Tornaes’ visit.
