Farmers in Sarlahi district have incurred a loss of over NRs 80 million due to the frequent bandhs and blockade declared by Maoists and political parties in the last four months, reports said.
Nepal Samacharpatra quoting Panchalal Mahato, market manager of agro-products in Nawalpur- Sarlahi, said that the loss was determined following preliminary research carried out in the district.
Most vegetables consumed in Kathmandu are imported from southern districts. Sarlahi district is regarded one of the major districts to export agro-products in the capital.
Last month, Maoists imposed a two-week long indefinite blockade among major highways in Nepal. During the period, Kathmandu and major urban areas experienced scarcity and rise in prices of construction materials, vegetables and fuels. But in the Terai, farmers were compelled to throw agro products -vegetables among others -in the absence of transportation and proper market, according to reports.
In recent times, blockades and bandhs have been popular means among the political parties to meet their political goals in Nepal.
