Due to mounting pressure from the health workers, the vice-chancellor of the Dharan-based BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), Dr Lok Bikram Thapa and registrar Khem Bahadur Rayamajhi have resigned from their posts on Wednesday.
They tendered their resignation to the Ministry for Health and Population. A meeting of ministry officials in Ramshahpath chaired by deputy Prime Minister, Amik Sherchan, who also holds the Health portfolio accepted their resignation.
The Ministry has sent a letter authorising professor Dr Rupa Singh of the BPKIHS to run the daily administration and economic activities. The authority has assigned these rights to Dr Singh until further notice.
Health workers of the hospital had padlocked the offices of the vice-chancellor and registrar as deputy registrar Rameshwor Devkota was dismissed from his post on May 17. Chief of the hospital, Professor Dr Pralhad Karki and acting rector Professor Dr Chandra Shekhar Agrawal have already resigned from their respective posts.
BPKIHS health workers, who were on strike for the past one month, demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor and registrar, called off their protest welcoming the government’s decision.
Earlier the vice chancellor and register of Turbhuvan University resigned due to the protest of employees.
Employees and students of Mahendra Sanskrit University are also in strike demanding the resignation of vice chancellor and other office bearers.
