The capital city along with other business and commercial centers in Bagmati and Narayani Zones have closed down completely with normal life coming to a virtual standstill in the wake of the two-day bandh called by the three student wings of the underground Maoists on Sunday and Monday.

The shops along the major thoroughfares of the capital city remained closed from early morning while vehicles opted to stay out of the road for fear of being attacked. The morning life though was rolling smoothly with milkmen and newspaper vendors making their usual rounds without facing any hitch.

The student wings of the underground party have called the bandh strictly in two zones after doing the same in the western part of the country only a week back.

The rebels have also announced Mechi and Koshi bandh on January 3 and 4, the day when Their Majesties the King and Queen are scheduled to grace a civic reception in Biratnagar being hosted by the people of the eastern development region.

“No untoward incidents have been reported so far during the wee hours of the bandh,” police said.

The valley DIG Rabi Kanta Aryal held a meeting with the district police officers and Chief District Officer Laxmi Prasad Bhattarai  on Saturday, which aimed at planning the security arrangements for the valley in course of the two day bandh.
