US embassy cautions citizens against Maoists

The US embassy has cautioned all American citizens currently visiting Nepal to remain alert against violence and intimidation that could be unleashed by Maoists ahead of a nationwide general strike called for September 16.

The embassy has also hinted at the possibility of increasing risks to American citizens and American interests in Nepal from Maoist insurgents waging a battle against government troops outside the Kathmandu valley.

Though no tourists have been injured so far, the US Embassy has warned its citizens that they could land up in trouble unknowingly as the Maoists have been resorting to a tactics of intimidating people to muster support for the strike called tomorrow.

The embassy said reports of threats and robbing of American trekkers, the destruction of assets belonging to two business companies having US affiliation and the anti-American posture shown by the Maoist leaders reveal the continuing risks to US citizens in Nepal.
