UNDP’s sub regional facility inaugurated

UNDP Sub regional Resource Facility (SURF) was inaugurated in the capital Tuesday. The facility provides quality advisory services to countries in seven countries of South Asia along with Afghanistan and Iran. “Nepal considers it a sign of trust and true friendship that the UNDP chose to locate the SURF here. Both UNICEF and UNFPA have already chosen Nepal as their centre for regional operations and the UN is to establish the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in the Asia and the Pacific in Kathmandu as well,” Foreign Minister Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat said.

Mahat and visiting Assistant Administrator for UNDP programmes in Asia and Pacific Dr.Hafiz Pasha jointly inaugurated the facility. King Gyanendra met Dr. Pasha Tuesday.

In an unrelated event, The United Mission to Nepal (UMN) announced the closure of the Amppial Hospital in the insurgency affected district of Gorkha from September 5 without assigning any reason. The hospital serving people of Gorkha and adjoining Lamjung was opened in 1969.
