The CPN (UML) Sunday said it has taken seriously the attempt to vandalize the party central office and its leaders by armed hooligans posing as ‘pro-nationalist’ activists on Saturday evening.

“The party strongly condemns the bid to attack the party central office and the leaders by national flag-carrying armed ‘Mandale’ criminals sanctioned by the ultra rightist element that is ruling the state,” a statement issued by the UML after a meeting of the standing committee said. “The meeting has taken this act seriously.”

The UML also warned that party workers and the agitating people would be compelled to come down to the street against such criminal elements if the ruling side fails check such hooliganism in time. The rampaging ‘Manadale gang’ ruthlessly attacked Ain Bahadur Magar, an UML activist, at Balaju, the UML said, demanding action against the gangsters.

The party also thanked journalists, human rights activists and security officials who reached the party central office on time and thwarted the possible vandalism at the party office headquarters.

Reports today said a group of around 200 supporters of the February 1 royal move drove around Ring Road of the capital on motorbikes chanting pro-king slogans and carrying national flags. The group, reportedly affiliated to the youth wing of the ‘nationalist front,’ held a meeting at Kalanki and warned that it would attack the UML central office in retaliation of alleged attack on the motorcade of Crown Prince Paras by UML supporters on Friday. The armed group also chanted slogans against the leaders of the opposition parties and threatened to physically attack them, reports added.

The UML standing committee also denounced the attack on pro-democracy demonstrators by pro-palace activists gathered at New Baneshwor to welcome the King and the Queen when the royals were returning home after a foreign tour on Friday. Several innocent students and passers-by were arrested by the police, the UML said.
