One of the senior leaders of the CPN-UML has said that CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal made stinging remarks against the government on Wednesday even threatening to walk out from the coalition government, out of hurt due to the ‘indifference of the Prime Minister towards him and his party’.

“It may have been his emotional outburst. For several hours since morning he had tried calling the Prime Minister but every time he got the reply that the PM could not attend his call as he was sleeping,” said Keshab Badal, a member of standing committee of the CPN-UML.

On Wednesday, after the news reports of arms import came out, the situation in the city gradually became tense. “It seemed the situation was headed towards what we saw on September 1, 2004. Therefore, general secretary tried to talk with the Prime Minister,” he added.

Badal said that neither general secretary Nepal nor the party was trying to whip up more differences. “This is not the time to aggravate problems of the country. CPN-UML is a responsible party and will not run away from its responsibilities,” he said.

He, however, said that the government indeed had some weaknesses. On the charge made by general secretary Nepal about the lack of cooperation from the Prime Minister and his party towards the ministers of UML, Badal pointed to the issue of teachers’ agitation where temporary teachers have demanded that they be made permanent. “We have not received cooperation from the Prime Minister and his party on such issues,” he said.

The CPN-UML is a major constituent of the ruling Seven Party Alliance.
