The main opposition party CPN-UML asked the government not to prolong the peace talks but to conclude soon with concrete results.
The powerful standing committee of CPN-UML that met in Kathmandu Tuesday asked the government to make the peace talks with Maoists result-oriented in order to restore peace and stability in the country. In a statement issued after the standing committee meeting, CPN-UML said that the unnecessary extension of the talks has only created confusion. The reaction of the main opposition party came following the third round of talks between the government and Maoist representatives which ended in deadlock.
CPN-UML also called for a broader consensus among democratic forces and solidarity among leftist parties in order to tackle the present problems of the nation. It has also asked the government to implement the 22-point proposal of CPN-UML including amendment of constitution for the solution of the problem.
On Maoist demand for constituent assembly to draft a new constitution, CPN-UML said that although it is the right of Maoist to demand a constituent assembly, it has no justification. It has asked Maoist rebels to denounce violence and join the democratic mainstream.
Maoists have demanded constituent assembly to write a new constitution. They have dropped the earlier demand of abrogation of monarchy. However, the government has dismissed the demand of constituent assembly.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister and chairman of the ruling Nepali Congress party Girija Prasad Koirala has also asked the government to set a specific timeframe for the conclusion of peace talks with Maoist rebels.
