Transportation in the eastern region has come to a complete halt on the first day of the indefinite strike called by transport entrepreneurs.

According to reports, hundreds of passengers have been left stranded in Dharan, Itahari and other cities in the region. More than 1,500 buses have halted their services in Mechi, Koshi and Sagarmatha zones.

The transport entrepreneurs called for an indefinite general strike after dispute with students in Dharan. In an incident last Friday, seven buses, a truck and a microbus were damaged when transport workers and students clashed. At least 15 students and two university teachers were also injured. The clashes started after a bus did not stop at the place where the students has asked the bus to stop – the gate of Purvanchal Campus.

Transport entrepreneurs have asked for compensation and action against the students who vandalized the vehicles.
