Traffic movement in various districts came to a halt and hundreds of passengers stranded after transport workers unions called for an indefinite strike.
The vehicular movement in the capital also affected due to the chakka jam (traffic movement halt) around the ring road called by the transport workers. Vehicles bound to and from various parts of the country remained stranded in Nagdhunga check post, the main entrance of the capital due to the strike.
Workers’ Union, All Nepal Transport Workers’ Union, Nepal Transport Workers’ Union and Nepal Transport Drivers’ Union — called for an indefinite transport strike in the Mechi, Koshi and Sagarmatha of eastern region and Narayani Transport Entrepreneurs’ Association called an indefinite strike in Narayani zone of central development region.
The transport workers have been staging a protest stating that the police “forcefully made the driver Hem Narayan Uraw sign a false affidavit” which says the driver reversed his bus to kill a cyclist, Ram Dev Yadav, 59, after he ran over him on Dec 18 last year.
Similarly normal life of Narayangarh, Birgunj, Hetauda, Bara and Parsa also affected due to chakka jam called by the Narayani Transport Entrepreneurs’ Association (NTEA).
The Association called for transport strike soon after meeting of security officials held in Mid Western Regional Administration Office on Friday decided to annul syndicate system.
Similarly, a report from Ithari said, transport workers vandalized four vehicles in Itahari on Monday morning.
They had also vandalized an ambulance ferrying the sick people to the hospital. Drivers of ambulance also obstructed the road for an hour protesting the attack.
Meanwhile, a meeting between transport workers, local administration, district leaders of political parties and representatives of all the organizations in Koshi zone are undergoing meeting in Itahari of Sunsari district to end the impasse.
