The army shot dead three Maoists in operations in Kanchanpur, Pyuthan and Banke Tuesday and Wednesday, the Defence Ministry said Thursday. A rebel each were killed in encounters in Kanchanpur and Banke Wednesday while another insurgent was shot dead in Pyuthan Tuesday, the Ministry said.
A Maoist suspect is feared dead after a futile search to find him when he jumped into a river with his hands tied in Baglung Wednesday while being transported to an army base in the district in far west Nepal after his capture, the Ministry said. He was identified as Dal Bhakta Tamang.
Fifteen rebel activists surrendered to local officials in Sindhupalchowk Wednesday, the Ministry said. Rebels blew up a bulldozer on road repairs with explosives at Baglung Tuesday, local officials said.
Victims of Maoist violence Thursday began a relay strike in front of the Singha Durbar central secretariat Thursday demanding relief. The displaced are camped in the capital unable to return to their homes.
Maoists overnight destroyed the village development committee offices at Shrinath in Gorkha, Ajyapur in Jajarkot and Aiselekharka in Khotang, police said.
