Thapa and Oli are now free, Pyakurel released

The government has lifted the order of house arrest against former premier Surya Bahadur Thapa and a senior CPN (UML) leader, K P Sharma Oli, while senior advocate, Sindhunath Pyakurel, has been released from detention.

Former premier Thapa and Oli had been placed under house arrest in Kathmandu immediately after the royal proclamation on February 1. Family sources of Thapa said the order of house arrest was lifted early Monday.

Similarly, central office of the CPN (UML) in Kathmandu confirmed that house arrest order against Oli was lifted around mid-night Sunday.

Earlier, the government had lifted order of house arrest against seven political leaders including former premiers K P Bhattarai and Lokendra Bahadur Chand and chairman of Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Pashupati Shumsher JB Rana, last Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the government has also released senior advocate and former parliamentarian, Sindhunath Pyakurel, from detention. Nepal Bar Association (NBA) confirmed that the Pyakurel was handed over to his family members at his house at Kalikasthan, Dilli Bazar this morning.

NBA had filed a haebus corpus petition at the Supreme Court last week demanding immediate release of its former president, Pyakurel. In response to the petititon, the apex court had issued show cause notices and ordered the government to present Pyakurel in person at the court within three days.
