Temba Chhiri abandons Everest bid

Kathmandu, May 25:Ram Krishna Shrestha, 22, a member of Everest Expedition 2000 AD New Record, has successfully scaled the 8,848 metres high Mt Everest.

Shrestha, a resident of Kathmandu Municipality Ward No. 15, reached the peak through South East Ridge on May 21 at 10.40 AM and spent five minutes there.

Shrestha had left for the world’s tallest peak from Camp IV on May 20 at 11.00 PM.

Meanwhile, Temba Chhiri Sherpa – the youngest climber aspiring to be atop the tallest peak – has abandoned his endeavour due to exhaustion and frostbiting, Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ministry said.

Temba Chhiri, 14, reached up to Hillary Step, accompanied by Ram Krishna Shrestha.

The seven-member expedition team was permitted to climb the Everest from South East Ridge route under the leadership of Bhakta Bahadur Thakuri, 49, the ministry said.

Paul Frank Giorgio, an investor from the USA and Nima Gombu Sherpa, 34, of Gaurishankar Village Development Committee, Dolakha also scaled the tallest mountain on May 24 at 06.30 AM.

Giorgio and Sherpa, the members of a nine-member H. G. 1 Everest Expedition from the United Kingdom led by Henry B. Todd, had started from Camp IV on May 23 and climbed the Everest from South East Ridge route.

Andrew Lock, a member of H. G. III Everest Expedition from the U. K. led by Patrick J. Kenny, also summitted the tallest peak on May 24 at 06.30 AM, using the same route. Andrew had left for the peak on May 23 at 10.00 PM.

Meanwhile, Christian Kuntner, Stepahan Andres and Abele Blanc of Italian Makalu Expedition team summitted 8,463 metres Mt. Makalu on May 15.

Similarly, Steve Hartland, Mathew Dickinson and Mark Winkworth of Jagged Globe Baruntse 2000 Expedition scaled the 7,129 metres Mt. Baruntse on May 15.
