Summit level talks to be held soon: DPM Sherchan

Deputy Prime Minister Amik Sherchan has said that the dates for the summit level talks between the ruling seven party alliance (SPA) and the Maoists will be fixed soon.

Deputy Prime Minister Amik Sherchan today said that upcoming talks between the seven-party alliance (SPA) government and the Maoists would find a breakthrough on key political issues if Prime Minister GP Koirala agrees for ‘democratic republic’.

Speaking at a public function in the capital, Sherchan said, “The summit talks will easily find solution to issues like the position of monarchy and management of arms if the Prime Minister becomes ready to lead a pro-republic alliance.”

Urging Koirala to agree on a republic, the DPM who leads the People’s Front Nepal, a leftist party that recently saw vertical split, expressed optimism that the upcoming summit talks would be decisive.

Speaking at a programme in the Capital on Sunday, the Deputy Premier said that internal homework is on to make the upcoming peace talks decisive.

Sherchan further said that the upcoming summit level talks will make some decision on the issue of arms management.

The four round of summit level talks between the ruling SPA and Maoists postponed inconclusively after both the sides failed to find agreement on the issue of Maoist arms management and fate of monarchy.

Reports said that Maoists have proposed November 9 deadline for the success of the peace talks.

Stating that the country has decided to go for the democratic republican set up, the Deputy Premier further said that there is a need of Republican Front in the country.

He also revealed that he had proposed the Prime Minister to lead the Republican Front.

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala made it clear that NC would not lead or join such Front.

DPM Sherchan, who also holds the Health Ministry portfolio, said that the government is working to provide free health treatment facilities to poor people.
