General Secretary of People’s Front Nepal, one of the constituents of the seven party alliance (SPA), Navaraj Subedi, has said that there should be a peace agreement between the government and the Maoists for the success of talks.
Speaking at a press conference in Dhangadhi on Sunday, Subedi said the 12-point agreement between the seven-party alliance and the Maoists on November 22 gave direction to the Jana Andolan (people’s movement), while the eight-point agreement on June 16 has treaded on the path led by the Jana Andolan and now the Maoists and government should make a peace agreement, expressing their commitment not to raise arms, according to media reports.
He urged the Maoists to immediately return seized property and open the padlocks on commoners’ houses and warned that if the Maoists did not do so, the SPA would take action and forcibly open the padlocks.
“I have heard that Maoists have not yet returned looted property of commoners. If the rebels do not abide by the agreements and fail to open the padlocks, the SPA will have to break the padlocks. This is also a warning to the Maoists,” Subedi added.
Commenting on the remark of the Prachanda about the Nepalese Army, Subedi said Prachanda should not have made such remarks.
Though the high level talks between the ruling SPA and Maoists agreed to ask the UN for arms supervision during the election of the constituent assembly and the government is mulling to send a formal letter to the UN in this regard, Subedi said, there was no need of supervision of UN or other foreign bodies for arms management.
Foreign supervision is needed in a failed state and Nepal has not yet been declared a failed state, so there is no need of foreign supervision here, Subedi said.
