Students Monday burnt tyres in Pokhara chanting aggressive anti-King slogans and protesting Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa’s presence in the lake city this afternoon, reports said.

PM Thapa, who is Chancellor of Pokhara University, was there to attend the University’s convocation ceremony, the reports said.

Despite the protests, no unpleasant incident took place until 3 pm Monday, as the security arrangements were tight, the reports further said.

Life in Pokhara, however, remained paralysed due to the one-day strike called by student protesters, according to the reports.

Almost all long and short route vehicles, educational institutions and shops remained closed due to the strike, called by the students to protest police intervention in their program on Sunday.

In Butwal, police is reported to have intervened in students’ talk program on “Relevance of Monarchy” Monday. Nearly 60 students were arrested before they could start the talk program, the reports added. nepalnews.com mr/rs Jan 26 04
