Protesting students demanded an all party committee to investigate Tuesday’s police firing in Butwal that killed one student and injured several others, students said Thursday.

Seven student unions affiliated to different political parties spearheading protests against recent price hikes of POL products said at a meeting in Butwal they reject two government appointed bodies to investigating firings.

The students have called for a strike in Rupendhai district Friday to protest the firings. The students demanded actions against those responsible for what they call excesses and suspension of the chief district officer of Runpandeahi district where Butwal lies. They also demanded a reduction in kerosene price.

Violence continued all day in Butwal for the second consecutive day as protesters smashed vehicles and paraded the streets shouting anti-government slogans, reports from the town said.

But Kathmandu was generally calm after violent protests Wednesday. nepalnews.com br April 10
