Tension flared in Biratnagar Wednesday afternoon after police used force to disperse the agitating students organizing a public hearing on whether monarchy is still the need of the nation.

Police took away banners and chairs from the program venue, reports said. Following the confrontation, police have sealed Mahendrachowk area, banning public activities.  It is also learnt that the students have shifted the function to Traffic Chowk.

Human rights activists, intellectuals, politicians and ordinary citizens  participated in the public hearing, it is reported.

Seven student unions  a few days ago had announced nationwide public hearings Wednesday on the topic.
