Kathmandu, jan. 30 : the final day of the martyrs week is being celebrated by organising a variety of special programmes in memory of the martyrs, who laid down their lives for the cause of democracy, in various parts of the country today.
Martyrs Week is observed from magh 10 to 16 by paying rich tributes to known and unknown martyrs including ganga lal, shukra raj, dharmabhakta and dasharath chand, who sacrificed themselves for liberating the nepelese people and the country from the injustice and tyranny of the autocratic rana regime.
Shukraraj Shastri, who was under house arrest for meeting mahatma gandhi in india and talking with him about Nepal’s situation, was hanged from a “khari” tree at pachali, teku on magh 10, 1997 charging him with treason, while dharma bhakta, who was also physical exercise teacher of His Majesty the late king tribhuvan was hanged from a “bakaina” tree at siphal on magh 13 the same year for helping in the establishment of “praja parishad” at his own house.
Likewise, dasharath chand and ganga lal were also framed up and shot dead at shobhabhagvati on magh 15.
A function will be organised at the shahid gate at tundikhel to pay tributes to known and unknown martyrs.

At the function, deputy mayor of Kathmandu bidur mainali spoke of the need for the government to formulate a national level programme to honour martyrs and provide assistance to their families.
Chairman of “Martyrs’ Ideals Study Committee” Hari Jung Shaha stressed the need to work for helping the dreams of martyrs materialise rather than trying to giving the martyrs central political label.
Historian bhuvan lal pradhan, politician harikrishna Shrestha and nhuchchhe Bahadur bajracharya and others stressed the need for one and all to derive inspiration from the life of martyrs for the consolidation of democracy, and provide every possible assistance to the families of martyrs.
At the function, convenor of martyrs day celebration main committee and mayor of Kathmandu keshav sthapit, deputy mayor bidur mainali, members of the metropolis and various dignitaries paid tributes to the martyrs.
Talking to rss, wife of martyr Ganga Lal Shrestha Hasina Devi Shrestha complained that the sacrifices of the martyrs, who laid down their lives for the country and democracy, have not been properly evaluated even after the advent of democracy.
The government has not bothered to inquire about the conditions of the families of martyrs, she said, adding political parties and leaders, who came to power after the advent of democracy thanks to the sacrifices of the martyrs, seem to have been forgotten the martyrs; this has hurt the martyrs’ families.
The martyr’s wife said that a few days ago she met the prime Minister and apprised him of her problems. Despite some assurances the prime Minister gave at that time there is no sign of the fulfilment of the assurances, she said. ” education of my two grand daughters and one grand son has been a big problem to me.”
Born in 1960 dasharath chand was shot dead inhumanely at the age of 37 by the Rana rulers at shobhabhagvati on magh 15, 1997 b.S., while ganga lal born in 1975 was also shot dead by the ranas the same day. He was 22.
