Even as Speaker Subas Nemwang intensified his efforts to ensure smooth functioning of the House proceedings on Wednesday, Madhesi MPs have said they will not allow it to run till their concerns are addressed. The House has been stalled by Maoist MPs as well as Madhesi MPs since last few weeks.

Hridayesh Tripathy, general secretary of Nepal Sadbhavana Party (NSP-Anandidevi), said that they were still seeking time from political leaders to meet to resolve the problem.

“We are also trying to get appointment to meet with the Prime Minister. But if the political parties do not show concern towards our demands, the House meeting on Wednesday, too, will be stalled,” Tripathy said after an interaction by Democratic Madhesi Organisation.

Earlier, Speaker Nemwang met with the Prime Minister to talk about the parliament obstructions. “The PM was very positive towards allowing the House to run smoothly,” Nemwang later told reporters.

He also met with Home Minister and chief whips of all major parties. Dinanath Sharma of the Maoists later told reporters that he hopes that discussions will reach to some conclusion by Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Speaker Nemwang declined the invitation by Speaker of Indian Lok Sabha Somnath Chatterjee to attend the 150th anniversary of freedom struggle in New Delhi on Thursday. When Indian ambassador Shiv Shankar Mukherjee met with him to give the invitation this morning, Nemwang said he could not attend it given the continued obstruction of the parliament, which demands for his active efforts to break the ice.

The Maoist MPs have been stalling the parliament demanding that it declare republic and demanding that Home Minister apologise for recent raid in YCL offices in Kathmandu. The Madhesi MPs, on the other hand, have demanded fresh census and fresh delimitation of constituencies based on that census, formation of high level commission to probe atrocities during Madhes agitation, among others.
