Speaking at a programme in the capital on Saturday, Mahara said that the government, which has not been able to consolidate peace further in a concerted manner, has started coming under the influence of regressive forces.
“We came for talks to bring about peace. But the efforts to render the peace process uncertain can serve the purpose of the regressive elements,” Mahara said.
Mahara also referred to the way the regressive elements had worked in the past to uphold nationalism and democracy while working for their own purposes.
Saying that the institution of monarchy has been exploitative all along, Mahara stressed the need to go for a democratic republican order.
On the upcoming summit talks, Mahara said the government has not given its opinion due to lack of consensus among SPA leaders.
“The nation cannot find a solution by considering our arms as a serious problem,” Mahara said, adding, “We will give up arms once the country finds a new political settlement.”
