KATHMANDU:   Security forces on Monday interfered in a peaceful public awareness programme organized by the seven-party alliance at Jirikhimti area in Tehrathum district and arrested a UML leader, reports said.

The security personnel forcefully snatched the parties’ banners after intervening in the programme and arrested CPN-UML’s district committee secretary Bhawani Khapung.

Khapung was later released after nearly six hours in custody.

Around 150 security men were deployed to break up the programme organized by the alliance of seven political parties.

According to reports, the security personnel barred people from entering the programme venue prior to the program. Political parties claimed that security forces sent back hundreds of people who were coming to participate in the programme from midway.

Meanwhile, a report from Kavre says security forces on Monday freed two persons who were arrested on Friday while they were on their way to participate in a CPN-UML mass meeting in Kathmandu.

The government has been creating various obstacles in peaceful protests of the alliance of seven political parties, which are protesting against the February 1 royal takeover, demanding restoration of total democracy in the country.
