Security has been tightened at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), the only international airport in Nepal, in the wake of the foiled plot of terrorists to blow up a passenger plane at London’s Heathrow Airport.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) in a statement on Friday said passengers traveling out of the TIA would be barred from carrying materials like aerosols, gels, toiletries, liquid soap, shaving cream, perfume or toothpaste in their hand baggage. Even babies will have to undergo checking as per the new measures.
Items bought from the duty-free shops at the TIA will be allowed but they must be properly sealed, a CAAN statement issued after a meeting of the TIA Security Coordination Committee said. The new measures will be applicable at both the international and domestic terminals of the TIA.
Meanwhile, talking to Nepalnews on Saturday, an official at the terminal duty section said the new measures were being followed strictly and that further security steps could be announced in future.
“The Aviation Security Division is studying what other measures could be introduced but nothing can be said as yet,” the official said asking anonymity. He said checking of baggage has been made stricter since yesterday.
CAAN’s announcement came a day after British aviation authorities foiled an alleged terror plot to blow up trans-Atlantic flights to the United States.
Security at the TIA had been made tougher after an Indian Airlines flight bound for Indian capital New Delhi was hijacked by terrorists in December 1999.
