National Human Rights Commission has urged the government to review its decision to set up a separate Human Rights Promotion Centre (HRPC) under the Prime Minister’s direct supervision, the Kathmandu Post said Thursday.
In a meeting held on Tuesday, NHRC expressed objections to the jurisdictions envisaged by the proposed directives of the HRPC and urged the government to prepare a new one, the daily said.
“The co-ordinatory role of the HRPC and some other provisions envisaged in the directives will directly overlap the NHRC’s independent status,” the NHRC said, reacting to the draft directives that the government provided to the rights body on November 19 for comments.
The directives authorise the HRPC to make necessary coordination with the National Dalit Commission, National Academy for Upliftment of Nationalities and Indigenous People as well as with the civil society in the field of human rights protection, the daily said.
