Rayamajhi commission continues questioning of ‘royal kingpins’

The high-level probe commission headed by former Justice Krishna Jung Rayamajhi continued its questioning of individuals accused of atrocities during the April Movement, including former army chief Sachhit Shumsher Rana on Friday.

Rana, a member of the dissolved Raj Parishad and the law minister of the erstwhile royal government, Niranjan Thapa, went to the commission’s office in Pulchowk at around 11:00 a.m. to register their statement. Their questioning was still on till 12:45 p.m.

Rana had been one of the most vocal of advisors to King Gyanendra during his direct rule.

Similarly, the probe commission is scheduled to quiz two senior former police officials – DIG of Nepal Police Krishna Basnet and AIG of Armed Police Force Ravi Raj Thapa from 2:00 p.m. today.

Both were dismissed from their jobs by the seven-party government for their involvement in suppressing the people’s movement.

The probe commission had issued summon notices to Rana, Thapa and the two former police officials on Wednesday. Vice-chairman of the erstwhile royal government Dr Tulsi Giri and former ministers Badri Mandal and Nikshay Shumsher Rana have already been quizzed by the commission.

The commission has said other functionaries of the toppled royal regime who have been accused of atrocities during the people’s movement will be grilled gradually.
