Nepalgunj, June 10: Incessant rains over the past four days has affected public life in Banke district.
Gharbari Tol, the hospital area, Bhrikutinagar, Bageshwari and the vicinities of the local cinema hall of Nepalgunj Municipality have been waterlogged while the runoff has entered houses in low-lying areas.
The absence of a functioning drainage system in the Municipality combined with the clogged and choked roadside drains, not cleaned for years, has further compounded the problem, local people complain.
Likewise, accumulation of water at various locations in Kohalpur has hit the local transport services.
As a result of the deluge, the Rapti and Duduwa Rivers have swelled while the increased water flow in the Raji river has increased the risk of floods in Holiya Village.
Flooding of the Rapti River every year leads to erosion in Holiya, Betahani, Fattehpur, Kamdi, Bankatti, Binauni, Bejapur and Kachanapur villages. However, the showers has brought some relief to the farmers arriving as it does just around the time when farmers are preparing their paddy nurseries, according to horticultural officer at the district agriculture development office Girish Kumar Mishra.
But the vegetable and fruits cultivated on low lying areas are likely to be damaged due to water-logging, Mishra said.
Likewise in Jumla, at a time when local farmers undertake the cultivation of various crops, they are facing difficulties arising from the incessant rains that started from June 4. The scale of damage from the rains is not yet known.
According to chief of the meteorology office Dibya Lal Chepal, 64.7 millimetres of rain has fallen so far and this trend will continue for some days.
Similarly in Kusma, the maize crop in 16 VDCs of Parvat district has been damaged completely because of incessant rain lasting for 75 hours. Transport services on the Baglung-Beni and Maldhunga-Beni motorable roads have been interrupted since Thursday due to landslides on both sides of the road resulting from the heavy downpour, the Parvat bus operators committee said.
