Rains cause extensive damage

Floods and landslides triggered by incessant monsoon rains have killed five persons and injured two others in Kathmandu and Kavre, official reports. The Bagmati River overflowed its bank in Kathmandu and swept away three persons and injured two women; landslides triggered by heavy rains killed two persons in Kavre.

Rains lashing the hill districts on east, central and west Nepal since Saturday have caused extensive damage, reports pouring in to the capital said Monday. The rains disrupted traffic on the Arniko, Prithvi and Tribhuvan Highways and sections of the Mahendra Highway in the terai at Bardibas.

Hundreds of villages have been inundated in Rautahat, Mohottari, Udaipur, Dhanusha and Bara districts. Jaleshwor, Janakpur, Nijgadh and other towns in the terai are inundated by flood waters. Rains have disrupted the only train service between the Bijalpura Jayanagar section of the Jayanagar Janakpur railway.

Rains that started lashing Kathmandu Valley since Sunday continued until Monday night. Police evacuated school children by helicopter from marooned schools in Bhalkhu in the capital.

The flooded Andhi Khola has damaged a hydel power plant plunging Shyangjha into darkness. Floods have also washed away thousands of acres of paddy crops and many domestic animals. (the pictures above are of the Sankhamul area) nepalnews.com br July 22
