Sudden winter rains and snowfall has affected life throughout the country, bringing in a cold wave, various reports said Monday.

Life has badly been disrupted in Taplejung in far-east Nepal, where the highest snowfall has been recorded in a decade, the reports said. People’s movement has come to a halt, 22 schools have been shut down and the snowfall is likely to damage this year’s crops in the district, the Rising Nepal said. Neighbouring district Panchthar is also facing the same problem, the daily said.

Tourists, especially domestic, at the same time, enjoyed snowfall in the hilly areas nearby Kathmandu, which received snow as high as two feet, other reports said.

Hill stations such as Nagarkot, Phulcnowki and Daman are packed with thousands of tourists from Saturday, the day when the light winter shower began, the reports said.

The cold wave has brought life in the Terai belt to a standstill, according to the reports. No sunshine has been reported since last two weeks in almost all Terai districts ranging from Jhapa in the east to Mahendranagar in the west, the reports said.

The mostly affected Terai cities are Biratnagar, Birtamod, Gaur, Bhairahawa and Nepalgunj, among others, according to the reports. nepalnews.com mr Dec 29
