Probe commission to begin work Friday

Kathmandu, June 7: A powerful commission to probe the Friday massacre at the Narayanhiti Royal Palace instantly killing King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya will begin its work tomorrow. Kng Dipendra also died in the shoot-out that killed or injured 14 members of the royal family and
immediate relatives. Chairman of the probe and Chief Justice Keshab Prasad Upadhaya said this in an interview to Nepal Television Wednesday night.

The commission will begin its work from an office in the capital which will be established later Thursday, he said. King Gyanendra Wednesday gave the Commission sweeping powers including rights to interview survivors of the carnage, including royal family members and visit the site of the
tragedy; the commission  has also been empowered to interview security personnel, doctors and conduct ballistic tests.

Leader of the main opposition, Madav Nepal, suggested the commission be headed by Chief Justice Upadhaya when it was suggested by King Gyanendra at Birendra Military Hospital shortly after being proclaimed King Monday, Upadhaya told Nepal Television. The new King suggested the formation of the commission to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Upadhaya, Nepal.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Taranath Ranabhatt, Raj Sabha Chief Dr. Keshar Jung Rayamajhi and Chairman of the National Assembly Dr.Mohamad Moshin were also present, Upadhaya said. Possibly, the commission will now complete its work Monday within the stipulated three days time. But Upadhaya said he could seek an extension if the work is not completed by Monday. Nepal
