Security forces have arrested Ganesh Regmi, a leader of the pro-Maoist trade union, from Kathmandu on Monday, reports said.

Security forces are, however, yet to confirm the arrest.

Regmi was the Bagmati-Narayani convener of the All Nepal Trade Union Federation, a pro-Maoist trade union. He played a leading role in the shutdown strike of one dozen leading factories in the country in September this year. The Federation later extended its call forcing over 30 other establishments to shut down.

The ANTUF withdrew its call for strike nearly a month later after a group of human rights activists brokered an agreement between the industrialists and the trade union activists.

Meanwhile, Maoist sources have confirmed the arrest of Regmi—an underground leader of the ANTUF. They have also appealed to the media and human rights community to help protect his life.
