Maoist supremo Prachanda met with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala in the presence of UN secretary general’s personal representative to Nepal, Ian Martin, at Koirala’s official residence in Baluwatar Sunday evening.

Though there was no announcement after the meeting, sources said the Prachanda and PM Koirala “informally agreed” to hold summit meeting tomorrow, which will announce the agreements between the ruling seven-party alliance and the Maoists on a number of issues including management of Maoist arms.

During the 45-minute meeting, Martin was briefed about the agreement on the modalities of arms management, the source added.

Maoist number two, Dr Baburam Bhattarai, Home Minister KP Sitaula and Nepali Congress central leader Dr Shekhar Koirala were also present at the meeting.

Meanwhile, Prachanda has disclosed that the SPA and the Maoists have reached an agreement on the arms management issue.

Talking to reporters after a training programme of party workers in Pokhara today, Prachanda said the two sides have agreed on ‘single lock system’ as per which the key of weapons storage will be with the Maoist commanders and this process would be supervised by UN inspectors. He said equal number of arms of the Nepali Army would also be locked up.

The Maoists would keep some weapons with them for the security of the weapons storage, he said.

According to journalist Sudarshan Ranjit, who is based in Pokhara, the Maoist chairman claimed that Monday’s summit meeting would finalise all the agreements reached between the SPA and his party.

On monarchy, Prachanda said the first meeting of the constituent assembly would settle this issue.
