Maoist strongman Prachanda Monday called for early third round talks between the government and rebels to end a communist insurgency that has claimed more than 1,800 lives in nearly six years.

He blamed the government for stalling the negotiations. Prachanda said in a statement the party’s recent politburo meeting authorized the next phase of parleys.

The second round of talks was held nearly three weeks ago. Insurgents continue to abduct opponents even after a truce to end the conflict.

Maoists abducted Dr.Chandra Bahadur Thapa, a national council member of the Nepal Communist Party (ML) from his home in Belchautara in Tanahu district Sunday, the party said.

Rebels Monday also abducted two activists of the Nepal Communist Party (UML) from their homes in Purandhara village in Dang, the party said.
