KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister and founder chairman of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), Surya Bahadur Thapa, has insisted that the broader political conference that he is going to convene is not targeted against anybody or any specific party.

In a statement issued Friday, former premier Thapa also denied allegations that the proposed conference was part of a design to promote authoritarianism or totalitarian ideologies in the country.

The proposed conference aims to give rise to a new democratic force by considering people as the source of power. So, there is no basis behind such suspicion, he said. He further insisted that the proposed new force was not being given birth in order to fulfill aspirations or vested interests of certain people.

Thapa’s statement came more than a week after former premier and opposition Nepali Congress leader, Girija Prasad Koirala, alleged that Thapa was trying to float a new party to serve the interests of the royal palace.

After months long feud within the RPP-a coalition partner, Thapa had announced that he would not lead a break away faction of the RPP but would rather convene a ‘broad political conference’ to give birth to a new
political force in the country.
