Police have detained 36 people from Kathmandu and Lalitpur charging them being involved in vandalism and arson in the capital on 1 September.

The Kathmandu Valley Police said Friday that they had also recovered Rs 218,000.00 in cash, a motor cycle, digital camera, DVD, CD, speaker and other goods looted during the day when thousands of people had taken to streets in protest of killing of 12 Nepalis in Iraq by a group of Islamic militants.

The protests immediately turned into what many believe to be ‘coordinated attacks’ targeting manpower agencies, media houses, mosques and foreign airlines in the capital.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ashok Shrestha, said that police had initiated legal action against the suspects on charge of arson, vandalism and theft.

Shrestha said the police had recovered over 11,000 Nepali passports from the vandalized offices of manpower agencies and were sending them to the Department of Labour.

Responding to a question, he said that police was investigating if there were any groups or individuals inciting people for planned attack. nepalnews.com by Sep 11 04
