Leaders of five political parties have termed Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa’s call for national consensus on Monday as a “new trick to remain intact in position.”

According to Kantipur daily, the agitating parties are not in a mood to quit their movement merely on the basis of a statement from the PM.

“There is no newness in the PM’s statement and it is meaningless,” said Ramchandra Poudel, a leader of Nepali Congress. “Unless we activate the Constitution, we cannot build national consensus.”

CPN-UML leader Bamdev Gautam said the PM has tried to take all credit of reconciliation bids, which the King initiated through audiences.

“PM Thapa had, in fact, wanted no contact between the King and parties. But it happened. Now the PM wants to take the credit for the audiences,” Gautam said.

According to CPN-UML spokesperson Pradip Nepal, the statement by a PM of “party-less culture” has no meaning. “We have not taken his statement seriously. The PM does not have support of even a single party.”

General secretary of People’s Front Nepal, Lilamani Pokhrel said the PM’s statement aims at “consolidating” regression, protecting interests of foreigners and remaining in power.

RPP spokesperson Roshan Karki said the government wants to take benefit from the present situation where the parties have not reached any consensus regarding the seven-point agenda of the King. nepalnews.com mr Jan 13
