NEPALGUNJ, July 31: Nepali Congress president and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba had a meeting with NC workers from various districts in the Mid-Western Development Region here today.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Deuba emphasized the need for the party workers to unite in order to finish off terrorism and build a prosperous Nepal.
Stating that NC workers in the Mid and Far Western Regions are the most affected by Maoist terrorism, Prime Minister Deuba pledged relief assistance for the victims.
The government will exercise its total strength in making the forthcoming elections successful and necessary steps for this (Western) Region will be taken following an evaluation of the state of affairs of various districts on the third week of August, Deuba said.
On the occasion, the party workers told the Prime Minister that the state of law and order in the districts is very serious and demanded increase in the number of police and army personnel in the villages, re-establishment of the displaced police stations, end to the ongoing trend of the Finance and Home Ministry of pointing to one another when Maoist victims request for relief assistance and protection of the displaced Nepali Congress workers.
They also demanded that the Mid-Western Region be declared a drought affected area, food crisis in Karnali region wiped out, telephone services dismantled by the Maoists in various rural parts of the region resumed and development works carried out along with the maintaining of law and order.
On the occasion the party workers also complained to the Prime Minister over the inability of the government in providing the declared relief assistance to the children of NC worker Bakhat Bahadur Shahi of Mugu. Shahi was brutally murdered by the Maoist terrorists.
Also present on the occasion were party vice-president Chiranjibi Wagle, general secretary Khum Bahadur Khadka, the central members of the party, the ministers and the ministers of state, ex-MPs and the chairperson of NC sister organisations.
