Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba Thursday visited Sungdel and Dipsung Village Development
Committees in the eastern hilly district of Khotang that was hit by a landslide Sunday claiming 44
lives and displacing nearly 228 families.
Thirty-nine bodies of the landslide victims have been recovered so far while five bodies are still missing, according to the Home Ministry.
Sixteen victims were rescued and airlifted to Kathmandu and nearby hospitals for treatment. Sixty
to eighty houses were completely destroyed and 222 houses are now uninhabitable, the report released by the Home Ministry said.
Around 300 livestock are missing. There is fear that the decay of livestock under the landslide
debris could give rise to an epidemic. People have been moving out to the neighbouring villages in search of shelter and food.
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba addressing the landslide victims gathered at the courtyard of
the Surya High School assured that the government would do everything possible to give relief to
the landslide victims.
Deuba said so far relief materials worth 170 thousand rupees had been received from the Morang
Industrial Association. He said the government would arrange for the necessary food grains, medicines and clothes at the earliest possible.
