Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala held separate talks with leaders of eight parties on Saturday evening at Baluwatar. However, there was no consensus on distribution of portfolios and immediate formation of interim government.
After holding two-hours of meeting with PM Koirala, Maoist chairman Prachanda told reporters that he had “very important” talks. “We had serious discussion on four agendas; the Gaur incident, the second amendment of interim constitution, cantonment management and formation of interim government,” Prachanda said.
Likewise, Madhav Kumar Nepal, general secretary of UML and Sher Bahadur Deuba, president of Nepali Congress (Democratic), also held separate talks with PM Koirala.
Jhal Nath Khanal, standing committee member of UML, who accompanied Nepal in the meeting with the PM, said that the country had reached to the point of forming interim government. “We have told the PM that the interim government should be formed in a respectful, just and balanced manner. And the PM said he will think about it,” said Khanal.
Reports say, the NC and UML still have differences over the distribution of portfolios. While the PM does not want his party to give up defense, home and finance portfolios, the UML has said it should be given one of those. The Maoists, on the other hand, has demanded senior deputy prime minister and some of the plum portfolios. The NC-D has also demanded that it be treated on par with other big parties in the distribution of portfolios.
Meanwhile, NC-Democratic leader Ramesh Lekhak indicated that eight party collective meeting would soon be held to decide on these issues.
