According to our reporter on site (2 p.m.), the clashes between the students and the police are underway. Students are pelting stones at the police who are responding with teargas shells. Police have already fired around 7 teargas shells to disperse the students. Thamel and Lainchour areas remain tense. The students also burnt effigies in protest of the price hike.
Meanwhile, students staged anti-POL price hike demonstrations at Patandhoka and Putalaisadak today. In the early morning demonstrations, dozens of students and a few policemen were injured. In course of protests the irate students from Patan Campus broke all the windows of the Lalitpur District Post Office at Patan Dhoka.
On Saturday, three students were injured when police charged students protesting the price hike in petroleum products at Thimi, Bhaktapur.
The government, on Thursday midnight, had increased the retail prices of POL by Rs 5 per liter, citing losses caused by the widening disparity between the domestic and international petroleum products. n
