Director General of South Asia department of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Kunio Senga, has reiterated ADB’s strong commitment to assisting development priorities in Nepal .

Speaking at the end of his three-day official visit to Nepal on Saturday, Senga said, “Nepal needs peace and stability to realize the aspirations of the country for progress and prosperity.”

He added that the Manila-based Bank was interested to support development priorities specified in the budget presented by Nepal government for the year 2006-07. He praised the budget of the new government terming it as a ‘forward-looking budget’ that addresses the root causes of the conflict.

He assured that ADB was ready to increase its assistance this year for reconstruction and rehabilitation program in the post-conflict period.

During his stay in Nepal , Senga met Prime Minister, Finance Minister, other members of the cabinet, senior government officials, development partners and civil society leaders with whom he discussed the budget priorities and development challenges facing Nepal and ADB assisted projects here. He also discussed reform issues and emphasized on the need for good governance.

He also met secretary general of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Lyonpo Chenkyab Dorji to discuss ADB’s partnership with the regional organisaion.

ADB is one of the leading multilateral donors to Nepal.
