Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister KP Sharma Oli presented the copy of the goverment’s letter to the United Nations on arms management to the parliamentary committee formed to minitor the peace talks on Monday.

Oli presented the government’s letter to the UN during a meeting of the committee. He told reporters after the meeting that the government letter sought UN’s help in management of Maoist arms, monitoring of Nepal Army’s activities and supervision of the proposed constituent assembly elections.

The Deputy Prime Minister had to return red-faced from a meeting of the committee on Friday as he failed to produce the letter as well as to explain its content. The committee had asked him to come up with the copy of the letter today.

The government has come under criticism from the Maoists as well as the constituents of the seven-party alliance for not consulting with all concerned sides before sending the letter to the UN.

The government had sent the letter, signed by Prime Minister GP Koirala, to the UN office in Kathmandu last Tuesday, which has already been forwarded to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The world body is yet to react to the Nepal government’s letter.
