The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the House of Representatives has asked the government to furnish details of the property of the royal family members and members of the cabinet within the next 15 days.

The meeting of the PAC on Thursday decided to call for property details of the royal family at a time when the government has said it will levy tax on the private property of the king and the royal family.

The PAC also asked members of the council of ministers and the committee members to furnish their property details within a fortnight. It was finalized that a separate panel could be formed to probe the property of the above-mentioned authorities if its requests were ignored.

The committee discussed on the “white paper” on Nepal’s economic situation presented by Finance Minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat at the House last month. The committee also asked the government to furnish details of non-budgetary expenses mentioned in the “white paper” and asked the Finance Ministry to justify the expenses.

In the meantime, the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of the House decided to test the legitimacy of the agreement signed by the top leadership of the ruling Seven Party Alliance the CPN (Maoist) on June 16 and other understandings reached in this regard.

The committee said that taking up the issue was essential in the context of the country’s apex law-making body assuming sovereign powers as per the spirit of the people’s movement 2006.
