Clashes between police and protesting students of seven different unions that followed Wednesday in the capital after the killing of student leader Devilal Poudel in Butwal left over 40 students injured and more than eighteen vehicles vandalized in different parts of the city, Nepal Samacharpatra reported.
Students in the capital protested against the killing of Poudel, district president of the Progressive Students’ Union in Butwal during police firing. Poudel was killed in police firing during attempts to disperse the feuding students and the operators of microbus in Butwal.
The students staged a demonstration to protest the price hike of POL products and in course of halting the traffic they landed up in a brawl with the operators of microbuses.
Students in the capital vandalized the railings in the streets, pelted stones at vehicles and set ablaze traffic signs and also obstructed traffic movement while protesting against the police operations in Butwal. Police entered the Tri Chandra College and manhandled the students, the daily reported.
Students in Biratnagar and Butwal closed the market completely protesting against the killing of Poudel in police firing. Similarly students brought out rallies in the far western town of Dhangadi.
Seven policemen along with police inspector Umesh Ranjit of the Durbar Marg police station in the capital were injured during the clashes. The students had taken control of Ranjit and the others at Ratna park for four hours.
