KATHMANDU: The main opposition party CPN-UML convened a meeting of all major opposition parties in Kathmandu Thursday to discuss the current political situation of the country, Maoist insurgency and peace talks between the government and Maoist rebels. The meeting attended by ten different parties accused both the government and Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) of not being serious and honest for ending the insurgency and violence peacefully through dialogue.
After the meeting Subash Nembang of CPN-UML issued a statement saying that all political parties agreed that the government failed to protect the constitution, people’s lives and property and solve the country’s burning problems. Similarly, Maoist rebels have continued acts of intimidation, terrorization, abduction, extortion and killing, which are the indications that they do not want the country’s problem to be solved peacefully, the statement says.
Opposition parties asked both the government and the Maoist leadership to be committed to peace talks and end the Maoist problem peacefully. Representatives of CPN-UML, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, CPN-ML, CPN-Marxist, CPN-United, CPN-Mashal, CPN (Marxist-Leninist-Maoist), National People’s Front, Green Party Nepal and some independent politicians attended the meeting and expressed their views on current situation of the country, the statement says.
