KATHMANDU: One person was killed and two others were injured, one seriously, in an explosion set off by suspected Maoists Monday at a carpet factory in neighbouring Lalitpur in the first such deadly attack in the Valley in a six year communist insurgency to establish a communist state, police said.

The army Monday recovered looted explosives, communication equipment, weapons spare parts from a rebel hideout in Nuva village in the far west district of Rolpa where security forces are intensifying search and combing operations against the insurgents, official sources said.

Two hijacked vehicles were also recovered, the Defence Ministry said. The explosives were captured by Maoists 13 days ago from an army barrack in neighbouring Dang district in the first rebel attack against the army in the extended communist insurgency.

The attack prompted the government to declare the Maoists terrorists, declare a three-month insurgency and start army operations against them; fundamental freedoms were also curbed.

Many rebels are suspected to have been killed when security forces foiled an overnight attempt by rebels to overrun an army barrack at Chautara in Sindhuli district, the Defence Ministry said.
The local administration announced night curfew in nearly a dozen of the kingdom’s 75 administrative districts to curb and eliminate rebel activities, announcements over state owned Radio Nepal said Monday.

A vigilante group overpowered Maoists who injured one person in Achham district in far west Nepal and some family members Monday, police said.
Security forces foiled Maoist attacks against army and government installations overnight in seven districts, the Defence Ministry said.
