Koteshwor area remained tense the whole day as local people blocked the road, vandalised the police post and set some vehicles on fire to protest the death of a person run over by a microbus in the main Koteshwor intersection Saturday.
Police opened fire to control the crowd in which at least three people were injured, police said. The microbus knocked and killed Nava Raj Timilsina Saturday morning. Police described it as an accident. However, local people who claimed to be eyewitnesses said that the microbus driver deliberately killed the person.
According to Chandra Bahadur Giri, the microbus first hit the person and later killed him when it reversed “If the vehicle had not reversed, the person would not have been
killed,” he said. Following the incident, an infuriated crowd stoned the Koteshwore police post and damaged several public vehicles including a trolley bus.
The crowd blocked the road by putting barricades. As a result, traffic movement between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur was disturbed whole day. Local people said the driver fled after killing the person. But the police said that the driver surrendered to police immediately after the accident.
The Police also said that they have already initiated investigation and action against the driver.
