Kathmandu, Nov.10: A district court in east Nepal Thursday remanded a Norwegian national to custody for interrogation into a complaint that he attempted to covert a Hindu to Christianity with monetary allurements.

The one-man Saptari district court remanded Trond Berg and Timothy Rai, a Nepali national from Lalitpur, to custody for further investigation. The court ordered the release of two other Nepalis on a bail of Rs.25,000 each and who were arrested of the same charge.

Police arrested the four on a complaint lodged by Lokendra Kumar Jha who said the group tried to allure him to convert on an enticement of Rs.40,000 and then proselytize. The four were arrested several weeks ago at a local inn in Rajbiraj while preaching. Hindu organizations have expressed concern at the increasing activities of Christian preachers in Nepal, the world’s only Hindu kingdom where freedom of worship is permitted but proselytization and conversion are banned.
