Nona Koirala passes away

Senior Nepali Congress leader Nona Koirala passed away at the age of 78 Sunday.

Suffering from multiple illnesses, Nona had been undergoing treatment at the Martyr Ganga Lal Heart Centre, Bansbari, since last eight days.

Leaders of the Nepali Congress and various other parties went to NC headquarters in Sanepa to pay her last tributes. Her body was kept there from 3.30 to 5.30 pm.

Last rites of late Koirala will be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat in the evening. Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had met Nona, his sister-in-law, at the hospital in morning.

She was admitted to the hospital following complaints of chest pain. A patient of diabetes and high blood pressure, Koirala was also suffering from jaundice lately. She was kept in ventilator since Saturday.

Nona is the widow of Keshav Koirala, one of the five brothers of PM Koirala, who died in 1997. She is survived by two sons Shekhar Koirala, a central leader of the NC, and Niranjan Koirala.

The late NC veteran actively participated in democratic struggles since 2003 B.S and was a revered personality within and outside the party.

She had been living with PM Koirala along with few other family members in Kathmandu for years.
