Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand met with CPN (UML) General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal Friday and assured him that the government had not made any kind of prior understanding with the Maoists but had only begun the process of peace talks, published media reports said.

Chand sought UML backing to make the peace talks a success. “We have not had any kind of prior agreement with the Maoists at the time of calling the cease-fire,” Prime Minister Chand said.

He said the talks would now be taken ahead after consulting all the political parties. Nepal responding to Chand’s request for his party’s backing said that the UML would first look into the ceasefire deal and only then decide about its future course of action.
